art + music
OR
music + art?

Having initially trained as a graphic designer and photographer, visual arts were never far from the centre of his attention, and analogue and later digital doodling was always part of his life. In February 2019 he made the decision to retire from the music business in order to focus his attention on art instead.

365 DOODLES

Whilst his kaleidoscopic cityscape photography was an instant international commercial success, in search of something more personal, Simon decided to take a new direction by starting to create digital paintings in late 2020.

2021 brought a period of personal ups and downs, tragedies and important milestones (along with four fatal iPad crashes) and whilst the world was still reeling from the global pandemic a new picture was born every day, which became the 365 DOODLES project.

Conscientious and perhaps stubborn he kept drawing, day after day, even when faced with questions such as, what does one draw on the day their mother dies? Or whilst going through a painful and difficult breakup? Thus, 365 DOODLES became the diary of 2021, the worst year in the life of Simon Iddol.

“My only goal was to keep drawing this and to finish the collection, this kept me going even on the worst days” - he concedes now. The drawings were published on a private (and since emptied) Instagram account, only visible to a select few.  The first print was sold in March 2021, 3 months into the project, and more sales followed soon. After countless hours of experiments to find the perfect physical format, a special watercolour printing material was chosen that not only adds tactility and texture to the finished artworks, but also lends them an eye-catching hand drawn quality. Much more complex than they appear at first glance, these doodles have various layers that unfold gradually. The backgrounds take inspiration from iconic pieces of contemporary art, the various animals that are captured in snapshot-like poses as if caught unawares appear to be in various stages of intoxication and each drawing also contains a hidden message.

Each picture has its own story, and that makes 365 stories.
This will be a heavy tome!
